B1 - FROM VERSAILLES TO GOYA: THE ARTS IN THE CENTURY OF REVOLUTIONS
The idea of Art linked to the concept of Revolution proposes a sum of simultaneous significations. On the one hand, the impossibility to separate artistic expressions from the timeframe that produced them; and on the other, the profound changes that materialized with the esthetics and the circuits of art production, distribution and consumption that constituted already then a powerful economic system and persist to this day.
B2 - FROM WILLIAM BLAKE TO THE FIRST IMPRESSIONISM. ROMANTICISM AND REALITY
This unit will examine the first 75 years of the 19 th century, focusing on the visual arts in Western Europe. It will encompass from William Blake's original methods and Fussli's suggestiveness, to the so-called Modern new esthetics. The arts reflected the problems of their time, their ideas about the past and their future projections.
B3 - FROM MANET TO GUSTAV KLIMT: PAINTING FROM IMPRESSIONISM TO SYMBOLISM
The idea here is to reflect together with the audience on the complex system of esthetic, social and political relations of European art of the 19 th century's last third. To this purpose, we have chosen France, Belgium, England, Germany and Austria as the centers of artistic expansion, based on their strong presence in the framework of European culture.
B4 - FROM EXPRESSIONISMS TO SURREALISM. THE HISTORICAL AVANT-GARDES OF THE 20 th CENTURY
This module shall wrap-up the two-year cycle of General History of Art, with a general approach to the so-called historical avant-gardes of art, those that may be situated in time during the first twenty-five years of the 20 th century. We will offer participants a straightforward but comprehensive understanding of art expressions that represent to this day a challenge to the public's appreciation.
